10 Actionable Tips for Creating a Successful Email List

Building an email list of customers and subscribers can be one of the most effective ways to grow your business and improve your marketing strategy.

By sending out regular emails that offer tips, advice, freebies, deals, and more, you’ll be able to connect with your audience in a way that brings them back to your website again and again.

But you won’t have any customers on your email list if you don’t know how to create one! Here are 10 tips to help you build an email list that will keep growing no matter what else happens in your business.

1) Create valuable free content

If you want people to give you their email address in exchange for your newsletter, it’s up to you to make sure they get something worth reading.

Here are some of our favorite ideas: Curate industry news and share it with your subscribers. Take notes at events, roundtables, seminars, etc., and send out an email recap to everyone on your list as soon as possible (better yet—find ways to share that news in other channels like social media).

Inject personality into each message. Answer questions and solve problems—that’s what makes content go viral!

2) Utilize pop-ups

There’s nothing wrong with using pop-ups and opt-in forms. Research shows they work! But it’s important to use them effectively, so as not to frustrate your readers or leave them with a bad impression of your brand.

In fact, 52% of people say they have an unfavorable view of businesses that ask for their email address in exchange for free content.

Make sure you don’t do that; instead, offer something valuable in exchange. For example, let visitors download resources like reports and ebooks or access information on a member-only area of your site where they can receive added bonuses like exclusive tips and videos.

These are things customers are happy to trade their email address for because they provide value to them.

3) Offer a free gift

Whether it’s an e-book, webinar, or online course—people love free stuff. Especially if they feel like they’re getting something of value in return. And that’s exactly what email lists are designed to do—give people some type of value up front.

So give them something worth their time and effort. People are more likely to open your emails and pay attention to what you have to say when they know there is some sort of reward involved, whether it’s a coupon or exclusive content or information that is only available through your email list.

Give your audience enough value upfront so that they will be encouraged to sign up on your email list and continue receiving emails from you with information that pertains directly to them as individuals.

4) Automate

Once you’ve created an initial list of subscribers, you need to keep growing that list. One of the easiest ways to do that is by automating your marketing efforts through e-mail. Make your subscribers feel important by sending regular newsletters with behind-the-scenes updates about new products and offers.

It’s like being in contact with friends or family—the feeling of value will be appreciated and reciprocated! The harder you work on promoting your content and brand, without appearing too salesy, will determine how many people are willing to join your email list. So work smartly and diligently to gain new loyal customers.

6) Give exclusive perks

If you’re looking to get more email subscribers, think about what your subscribers would want. Chances are, it’s something that costs money. If you’re offering a free e-book or coupon code, not only will you get their email address—you’ll also help improve your relationship with them.

People feel valued when they get something of value in exchange for their contact information and any repeat purchases are likely to come from those people. This works especially well if you have multiple products: one can be targeted at new customers while another is targeted at repeat customers.

Have both sign up forms on your website and run promotions that give discounts or exclusive offers to people who sign up through each specific form.

While you don’t want to overload your visitors with too many links to social media profiles, you can still make it easy for your readers to follow and connect with you. Add links to your social media accounts in places like author bios and so on; that way, readers who enjoy your content will have a chance to learn more about you without going far.

This is particularly useful if they have questions that can only be answered by reading another one of your blogs or checking out something on Facebook or Twitter.

8) Don’t be afraid to ask for something in return

Sure, you want to provide awesome content to your readers and give them value. But let’s be honest—the real reason you have an email list is because you want people to read your stuff and give you their money. (Or at least come back again.) It’s okay to throw that in there now and then.

9) Don’t forget about mobile users

No one wants to receive unsolicited emails. So make sure your opt-in forms are mobile responsive, too. Make it personal: It’s easy to send messages out to every email address you collect and call it marketing, but don’t forget that each of these email addresses represents a real person who opted in to hear from you because they want to learn more about what you do and how they can help you make your business better.

Personalize your emails by name or even location so that recipients feel like you are talking directly to them. Be open about what happens next: Some businesses will have an opt-in form on their website that explains exactly why they need an email address and gives visitors full transparency into why they should sign up.

10) Set up Google Analytics with UTM parameters

Google Analytics allows you to view important information about your website traffic, such as where your visitors are coming from and what keywords they used.

By adding UTM parameters, you can get even more detailed information on your traffic sources and campaigns (e.g., when someone subscribes to your email list).
