error appears when the DNS (Domain Name System) cannot find or connect to the IP address for that website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your browser then assumes that the website domain name doesn\u2019t exist. The NXDOMAIN part of the error stands for \u2018non-existent domain.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The error looks different in other browsers. The problem is that your computer isn\u2019t able to connect to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that said, let\u2019s see how to troubleshoot and fix this error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Fix_the_DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN_Error\"><\/span>How to Fix the DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN Error?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several ways to fix the DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN error. However, it\u2019s important to first check that it really is an error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before doing anything else, you should check that you typed the domain name correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, if you accidentally typed incorrect spelling for a domain name, then your browser may not be able to find that domain and give this error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you clicked on a link, you should still check that the domain name is correct. It could have been mistyped by whoever created the link.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re certain that the domain name is correct, then click the \u2018Reload\u2019 or \u2018Try again\u2019 button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn4.wpbeginner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/nxdomain-error-reload-chrome.png\" alt=\"Clicking the button to reload the website\" class=\"wp-image-85892\" title=\"Clicking the button to reload the website\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, you should try accessing the website from a mobile phone (4G network), so you can see whether the issue is with your device or WIFI connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the website doesn\u2019t load on your mobile phone either, then you need to immediately contact your WordPress hosting provider because this means that your website is down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However if the website loads just fine on your mobile phone, then you know the issue is either with your computer or your WiFi connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s try solving that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing you should try is restarting your computer. If that doesn\u2019t help, turn your internet modem off and on. These steps may automatically clear DNS and network-related issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the error is still appearing, then you may need to try the following methods. We recommend starting with the first one and working through them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Clear Your Browser\u2019s Cache<\/li><li>Turn Off Experimental Chrome Features<\/li><li>Flush Your Computer\u2019s DNS Cache<\/li><li>Release and Renew Your IP Address<\/li><li>Use Google\u2019s Public DNS Servers<\/li><li>Check Your Computer\u2019s \u2018hosts\u2019 File<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"browsercache\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Clear_Your_Browsers_Cache\"><\/span>Clear Your Browser\u2019s Cache<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To clear your cache in Chrome, go to the page <code>chrome:\/\/settings\/clearBrowserData<\/code> in your browser. This should give you a popup window where you are able to clear your cache.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, set the time range to \u2018All time\u2019 then check just the \u2018Cached images and files\u2019 box. Next, click the \u2018Clear data\u2019 button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn2.wpbeginner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/clear-browsing-data-chrome.png\" alt=\"Clearing cached images and files in Chrome\" class=\"wp-image-85893\" title=\"Clearing cached images and files in Chrome\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you aren\u2019t using Chrome, check out our article on clearing your browser cache for instructions for all major browsers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, try the website again. If it still shows the error message DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN, simply try the next solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"experimental\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Turn_Off_Experimental_Chrome_Features\"><\/span>Turn Off Experimental Chrome Features<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve enabled any of Chrome\u2019s experimental features, then these could be causing the DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To turn these off, go to <code>chrome:\/\/flags\/<\/code> in your browser then click the \u2018Reset all\u2019 button at the top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn4.wpbeginner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/chrome-reset-all-experiments.png\" alt=\"Resetting all experiments in Chrome\" class=\"wp-image-85894\" title=\"Resetting all experiments in Chrome\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If the website you want to access still shows the error, try the next solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"dnscache\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Flush_Your_Computers_DNS_Cache\"><\/span>Flush Your Computer\u2019s DNS Cache<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Your computer often saves (caches) the IP addresses of websites that you\u2019ve previously visited. If the website\u2019s IP has changed, then that can cause the DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how to flush your DNS cache.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> These instructions are for Windows 10. For macOS instructions, check out our guide on clearing your DNS cache.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, search for the Command Prompt app. Go ahead and open it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> If you\u2019re not logged in as an administrator, use the \u2018Run as administrator\u2019 option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn4.wpbeginner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/open-command-prompt-app.png\" alt=\"Opening the Command Prompt app\" class=\"wp-image-85895\" title=\"Opening the Command Prompt app\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, type <code>ipconfig\/flushdns<\/code> then press Enter on your keyboard. If the error message DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN still appears, try the next solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ipaddress\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Release_and_Renew_Your_IP_Address\"><\/span>Release and Renew Your IP Address<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The next step is to renew your computer\u2019s IP address on the internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Go ahead and open up the Command Prompt app, as shown in the previous step. Next, enter the following commands in this order. Press Enter after each one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>ipconfig \/release<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>ipconfig \/flushdns<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>ipconfig \/renew<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will see quite a few lines of information after entering the first and third commands. This is normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn3.wpbeginner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/command-prompt-renew-ip-address.png\" alt=\"Renewing your computer's IP address\" class=\"wp-image-85910\" title=\"Renewing your computer's IP address\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If the DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN error still appears after this, try the next solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"publicdns\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Use_Googles_Public_DNS_Servers\"><\/span>Use Google\u2019s Public DNS Servers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>By default, your computer uses the DNS server from your internet service provider (ISP). You can change this to use Google\u2019s public DNS server instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Windows, open your Control Panel then go to <strong>Network and Internet \u00bb Network and Sharing Center<\/strong>. If not, try the final method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hostsfile\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Check_Your_Computers_%E2%80%98hosts_File\"><\/span>Check Your Computer\u2019s \u2018hosts\u2019 File<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The hosts file is a file that your computer uses to map domain names to IP addresses. If the website is incorrectly recorded in this file, that can be the cause of the DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Windows, you can find this file through File Explorer. First, open File Explorer, then find the Windows folder on your computer. It\u2019s normally in the C:\\ drive. Mac users can find the file under \/private\/etc\/hosts\/ folder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, go to <strong>System32 \u00bb drivers \u00bb etc<\/strong>. Here, you need to locate the hosts file and double click on it to open it. If it is, delete it along with the IP address next to it.
